From its inception in1967,the Graduate Institute of History has specialized in the study of European and American studies. The objective is to train qualified teachers of Western History for the Republic of China. From 1992 on, the Graduate Institute began to cooperate with "The Institutum Historiae Ecclesiae" to study the developmental history of the Catholic Church.

An early goal of the institute was to translate important historical works into Chinese. This would provide more reference works for the Chinese students. To promote research by students, the institute publishes an annual journal containing articles written by students.

Although historical research may range over a wide variety of subjects, it can roughly be grouped into three areas: textual recording, textual research, and textual criticism. Since its re-establishment in 1963, the History Department has sought to familiarize students with these three areas in the hope that they will achieve a complete mastery of historical research. In addition, the department also aims to educate students to do research both in Chinese and Western History so as to facilitate the flow of culture between East and West.

The objective of the department culminates in training students to develop the three specialties of a perfect historian: talent, scholarship, and moral integrity. Upon graduation, students should be able to undertake independent research, engage in advanced studies, and make contributions to scholarship as a vocation.
